Ommochrome Pigmentation of the linea and rosa Seasonal Forms of Precis coenia (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae)

چکیده

Precis coenia exhibits a seasonal color polyphenism. Animals reared under long-day conditions develop a pale tan pigmentation on their ventral hind wing (the linea form), whereas animals reared under short-day conditions develop a dark reddish-brown pigmentation (the rosa form). This developmental switch is mediated by a shift in the timing of ecdysteroid secretion at the outset of adult development. In addition, a single recessive gene mimics the effect of shortday conditions and, when homozygous, produces a constitutive rosa phenotype. This article analyzes the pigment composition of the ventral hind wing pattern of the linea and rosa forms. It presents a new thin layer chromatography system that separates ommochromes with high resolution. The linea pigmentation was found to be due to xanthommatin, while the rosa pigmentation is due to a mixture dihydro-xanthommatin and ommatin-D. Induction of the rosa form thus requires the synthesis of a new pigment (ommatin-D is a sulfate of dihydro-xanthommatin) and the stabilization of the reduced form of xanthommatin. Arch. Cautery-induced colour patterns in Precis coenia (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae).

Cautery of the dorsal hindwing in the butterfly, Precis coenia, induces the formation of a concentric colour pattern around the site of injury. The induced pattern is identical in pigmentation to the eyespots that normally develop on this wing surface. This response to cautery also occurs, though much less dramatically, on the ventral forewing. In addition to the peculiar response to cautery, t...

Colour pattern modification by coldshock in Lepidoptera.

When young pupae of Vanessa cardui, V. virginiensis and Precis coenia (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae) are exposed to severe coldshock many develop aberrant adult wing patterns. For each species, a synchronous cohort of experimental animals always develops a broad range of aberrant pattern morphologies but these can always be arranged in a single unbranched morphological series. When such phenotypic ...

Competition among growing organs and developmental control of morphological asymmetry

Fluctuating asymmetry is often used as a measure of developmental instability, although its developmental basis is poorly understood. Theoretical models and experimental studies have suggested that feedback interactions between structures on the left and right sides of the body play a pivotal role in the control of asymmetry. Here we provide experimental evidence that competition for a limiting...

The Genus Junonia (lepidopterra: Nymphalidae) in Pakistan

A checklist of butterflies of the genus Junonia (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae) of Pakistan is presented with a new record for Pakistan i.e. Junonia (Precis) atlites. In total six species of genus Junonia are recorded from Pakistan. A key to the butterfly species of the genus Junonia of Pakistan and their distribution is given.

Hormonal control of GTP cyclohydrolase I gene expression and enzyme activity during color pattern development in wings of Precis coenia.

Color patterns of butterfly wings are composed of single color points represented by each scale. In the case of Precis coenia, at the end of pupal development, different types of pigments are synthesized sequentially in the differently colored scales beginning with white (pterins) followed by red (ommatins) and then black (melanin). In order to explain how formation of these different colors is...
